This article explains client-side image mapping. The author explains the difference from this and CGI as well as image mapping from the start. I'd keep this bookmarked if I were just starting out.

Imagemap Tutorial

This was a great site that explained X and Y coordinates, poly, rect & circle mapping, etc. It helped me out a lot when completing my assignment.
