This tutorial is more in depth than the last entry. He goes into the difference between server-side and client-side imagemapping, and the benefits and cons of both. He also gives examples of different imagemaps and how they can sometimes be hard to identify. Overall, a great tutorial.

by Joe Burns
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutorials/image_maps/article.php/3479741
This article explains client-side image mapping. The author explains the difference from this and CGI as well as image mapping from the start. I'd keep this bookmarked if I were just starting out.

Digital Fashion was an article written by a designer. He talks about how designs need to appeal to certain audiences among other things, like how design is always changing. He also states that it's a very influential process and inspiration is necessary to get a good thing going. The main point is that the criteria a web designer needs to meet is similar to that of a fashion designer.
